Looking for a small handy thermal imaging device?

I got a chance to test out the Armasight Sidekick 320 Mini Thermal Monocular and this is how it performed.

What is supplied?

Before I get into the review itself, lets take a look at what Armasight has to say about the Sidekick 320:

The Sidekick 320 is the smallest fully multi-functional 12-micron 320 thermal imaging monocular on the market. This unit boasts a fast 60Hz frame rate for smooth operation and industry-best, outstanding visual acuity, based on Armasight’s Iron Wolf thermal technology platform. Weighing under 210 grams, the Sidekick can be used as a handheld mini-monocular or can be headset/helmet mounted utilizing the built-in mini-rail for hands-free operation. The high definition 1024×768 OLED display provides a crisp image, with iconography providing key information. The Sidekick utilizes simplified 3 button controls that allow for easy manipulation in the field and offers one-touch in-unit video recording to capture all of your experiences.

For the initial testing I took the Sidekick 320 Mini Thermal Monocular out on a hiking trip. Right away, I spotted deer that I normally would have never spotted with just my eyes through the early spring brush. I quickly chose the white hot color pattern and snapped this image.

Then I chose the black hot color pattern and took this picture. At this point the big doe already had her friends head out of frame and she was getting ready to follow.

As she wandered off, the last picture was on the very colorful red hot coloration. At this point, she was done being the test subject.

The robin on the railroad tracks curiously watched me. As you can see in the white hot glow, it is to the left in the image below.

Switching over to the black hot coloration the robin can be seen wandering down the embankment.

I tested the Sidekick 320 Mini Thermal Monocular both night and day and came to a few conclusions on my sample product. The buttons were very tight to use and I had to really push with my finger nail to change over color patterns, or just head through the menu itself. While the Sidekick 320 Mini Thermal Monocular worked both night and day with a few issues, I vastly recommend the Armasight Contractor 320 over this model. My reasons are it is both portable thermal imaging devise and a thermal imaging weapon scope.

The time came to send both products back and I can honestly say thermal imaging devices are specialty tools that certainly have their places in predator control, defense, and of course fun!
