SURVIVAL GEAR REVIEW: TACAMO EMERGENCY FIRE KIT

When fire is an emergency response your kit better be ready.

Titan Survival’s Tacamo Emergency Fire Kit has been made to address this situation.

I got a chance to test out the Tacamo Emergency Fire Kit and see if it lives up to it’s important job.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

One slip out of your canoe or a fall through the ice can spell disaster. Any time when moments matter to get a fire going you better have a dedicated kit ready to respond. The comprehensive Tacamo Emergency Fire Kit offered by Titan Survival has plenty of components to get that job done right in cold, wet and stressful moments.

Housed in a high-quality, water-resistant, waxed canvas bag the stainless steel kit container can double as a cooking pot or a way to boil water. The ranger band safeguards the kit container from opening. It too could come in handy for various purposes on the trail including use as a tourniquet. The waxed canvas bag is also lined with a water resistant hunter orange colored material. Turn that bag inside out and use it for signaling or carry water in it from a nearby stream.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

That kit container sure has some uses while afield. Boil water, cook food, or use as a reflective surface for signaling help.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

The non-brittle large premium 0.5″x 5.5″ ferro-rod with a steel striker has a large chunk of paracord attached. That paracord with multiple inner strands has many uses and the ferro-rod is large enough to support a large amount of use. Make sure you scrape off the black paint before throwing serious sparks. The paint is there to protect the ferro-rod until use. Once that is gone off your striking area showers of hot sparks are easy to through.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

The 5X magnifier should be perfect for starting a fire in sunny conditions. It does through a tight area of intense light needed for combustion. Tested on a windy cold winter’s day it warmed the tinder but failed to light it. I am sure in hotter temperatures and drier weather the outcome would have been more advantageous. Still it would be great for finding small splinters or examining something small out in the wilds.

The collapsible bellows is small but when deployed puts the air right on the embers you need to keep lit. I found this tool to be incredibly useful and well put together during testing.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

Good ole charcloth has been the take along by woodsmen for centuries. This kit indeed has a tin with a folded large piece of charcloth. When using the ferro-rod this charcloth instantly ignites and takes embers well.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

Included are 4 fatwood sticks and a 30g bag of waxed wood chips. The waxed wood chips ignited at once when sparks from the included ferro-rod hit the small pile I made. The fatwood sticks are perfect to adding to your tinder pile before adding larger fuel.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

Two CHOKTAW Tinder’s waxed jute rope sections are also added to this kit. Pull the pieces apart and they take a flame from a lighter or match well and burn like candles. I tried using the included ferro-rod on these waxed jute rope sections but was unable to get a spark to light the material successfully. I would save this fire starter for true flame ignition sources.

THE CLASSIC WOODSMAN

After reviewing the Tacamo Emergency Fire Kit I can tell you it certainly covers the subject well. There still is room enough in the kit to add some extra fire ignition sources or other survival items if you like. Tuck a space blanket and an emergency poncho in the canvas bag itself. Remember there is no one survival kit that fits the needs of all users in all environments. That being said the Tacamo Emergency Fire Kit is a great base that can be changed around if needed by the user. Practice with what you carry and be proficient with it. In a survival situation your knowledge and this kit could save your life.
